Grab an old wire laying around and put 'em on and fires right up. Just in case someone was looking at it prior let it run for a good while with no problems noted. 2) '85 Ranger; jumper box starts it right up, battery charger wont give it any charge though. (brand new Die Hard battery) Rodney decides to try a new battery to see what happens. Answers! 1A) Big fight the night before with husband. :-( (Wonder about the rack now..) 2A) Plastic shipping cap on the negative terminal was still on the battery!!! Both fixed at minor cost, but certainly a reminder to make a quick visual check under the hood before calling the tow truck. The cause for 1A is disturbing but 2A reminds me of the tale of a poorly running vehicle brought in for diagnosis and the air filter was still in it's shrink-wrapped covering. Plenty of other odd stories like this but the odds of 2 in one day seemed high and thought I'd share them. Its a rectangular sensor unit with two rubber sensor hoses going down to the exhaust tube. Literally took about 5 minutes to change. It also has an electronic plug on it and one hex screw holds it in. After searching the phone books for parts stores, junkyards, and other vendors,I found that NAPA dealers carry new exact replacements for about $40 or sorunning to an internal circuit board. It looked like maybe the diaphragm on mine was darkened with carbon. Anyway, that's what did the trick on my 94. George K. Hi George, Thanks much for your tip on the EGR sensor. Just bought one today from NAPA and installed it. That did the trick, no more check engine light. It really gripes me that I took our Explorer to a Ford dealer (supposed to be experts!) and spent $269 only to have the light still come on after I left. When I told the tech that I got a code regarding the EGR system, he said it has nothing to do with it....wow, was he wrong. Now, to try and see if I can get some money back on their misdiagnosis. Probably have a better chance winning the lottery. This list is the greatest...thanks again. I just want to say thank you for all of your suggestions regarding the problems that I was having with my chattery starting clutch. Does anyone remember my prior posts about a year ago regarding the chattery start in my 1988 Bronco II? Well, I think we may have it licked. I was pulling the codes, and comparing what I found with my prior notes, and something popped up that I have not noticed before. It suggested code 21 consistently through five key in, engine running tests. I looked up code 21, and the haynes manual told me that this was the ECT sensor. I pulled the wire, cleaned the contacts, and re-installed it. Still the same code... I even tried to dump the code by disconnecting the battery for half an hour, and the darn 21 kept coming back! So, for $22 I had myself a new engine coolant temperature sensor from Kragens. Two hours later (My original temp sensor was all seized in there) the new one is in, taped and connected. I re-set the computer, drove it for two days and pulled the codes again. Everything checks out! We're back to a code 1-1. Excellent. How much influence does teh ECT sensor actually have to do with the engine running? I can let out the clutch in reverse or first gear and it engages real smoothly right now.... Wow, I was chasing that article for a while! I replaced the clutch, flywheel, all of the little pices in there, master slave, etc. I'm running a 1988 bronco II with the 2.9 engine. 3" James Duff dual shock lift kit, 2" James Duff body lift kit, 31" tires, 4.10 gears, Detroit Locker and a really tight posi-pack, custom drive shafts, MSD 6A ignition, JBA headers, Flowmaster Cat Back system, James Duff power chip, ADS Super Injectors, 45 psi regulator, 58 MM throttle body, K and N intake, electric fan, 4.0 Radiator, On Board Air and Warm 8000# winch... Plus a bunch of other stuff which I forgot about at the moment. Oh, and a soon to be coming James Duff Arma Coated winch mounting pre-runner bumper, just as soon as it shows up here! It's been a week and a half, already! Good help is hard to find.. been looking for a year for someone to fit in at the shop I work at with no long term result. > and spent $269 only to have the light still come on after I left. > When I told the tech that I got a code regarding the EGR system, he said it > has nothing to do with it.... "The customer is always wrong".. I've seen that attitude when trying to tell the tech what you think the problem is if he feels differently. (And may be guilty myself on occasion if it doesn't sound right..) I'm NOT complaining at you, but sometimes we (tech's) get misdirected by well meaning information during the diagnosis. (by the owner OR other tech's at the shop) A good example is one from today; new alternator and battery with no charge (Batt. by customer and alt. by us, no charging still with a dim charging light) Tech R says all fusible links OK and all fuses OK. when I get it. True enough with the vehicle RUNNING. Not true with key on and engine off. Without that 'valuable information' I might have solved the problem an hour sooner. (Bad connection to one fusible link and with the engine running the alternator would supply voltage to the circuit but not the battery.. whew.. odd one to troubleshoot!) > wow, was he wrong. Now, to try and see if I can > get some money back on their misdiagnosis. Probably have a better chance > winning the lottery. This list is the greatest...thanks again. Well I'd say the EGR system is probably the #1 problem I see among Ford vehicles at the shop... I don't know what else the tech saw in his 'diagnosis' but personally I'll address the EGR first as it'll affect MAP (if equipped) and O2 readings depending on the way it fails. If the dealer gives you the run around go over their head to the area representative and/or the BBB. Good luck!
