Has anyone had this happen to them? Can I replace just the seal? How diffucult is the job? Special tools? YOu know the drill. TIA! I have a 96 Ranger, 2.3L 4x2, 5 speed manual trans. and has no A/C. I'm wondering about installing an Aftermarket Air Conditioning and am seeking any suggestions and advice. I'm going to assume it's similar to the box on a '85 B-II; I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong! ;-) On mine the seal is on the INSIDE requiring removal of the box and then the shaft. (Pitman arm removal tool or suitable eqiuvalent needed.) Reassembling the unit is the tricky part; the sector adjustment is not real tolerant of misadjustment.. too tight and the steering will NOT return to center on its own (a real PITA and unsafe to drive), too loose and the steering is sloppy. $10 for the seal or $175 for the box (re-man). After a few hours in 100+ heat and then finding the steering almost un-driveable (too tight) without more tinkering last summer I'd think hard about getting a new box next time. ($$ permitting of course!) It's leak free and works acceptably now but that week I drove it before getting the adjustment right without the prescribed spring tension tools was pretty hairy. (Can you tell I hate suspension/alignment work?) Two choices: A) Almost factory type that would integrate with the dash and look factory etc. B) "Hang-on" that would be under the dash and somewhat cobby looking. Both work well if cold air is your main goal but a factory type kit would (IMHO) be your best bet due to parts availabilty later on. (Can be a nightmare to find/adapt parts for non-factory units... a co-worker fought an 'add-on' Isuzu all last week and finally we gave him back his money and referred to Isuzu.. labor would be quite a bit higher for the integrated system Vs. the hang-on... Down the road the cost could be off-set though. You might want to re-post your query in the 'questions' forum of http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://aircondition.com Warren or Nacho might be of good help there. Expect something on the order of $1200-2000 if done professionally; maybe 1/2 that if DIY. Tim PS: Feel free to e-mail off list with more Q's about A/C to get long boring replies. ;-) TT ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://webmail.netscape.com. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2000 03:36:04 -0500 From: Freewheel Subject: Re: [ Aftermarket Air Conditioning] You might want to check with the local dealer to find out who supplies their after market units, I use to work at both a Nissan and a Ford dealer and we put after market units in almost half of the cars on the lot. The practice is that the dealer can purchase cars without air and add it later for much less than a factory unit and then still charge just as much for the AC unit. For me, running my site would have ended a long time ago had I not enjoyed doing it as my hobby. Running it while still attending school is another challenge which was aided by volunteers. So anything you need to do the get some of what you've put in back (and then some), I have no problem with. This list has been a tremendous resource for me. Thanks for all your work and keep it up!
