Haven't seen anyone do this to a '99 yet. I've seen many of the older (95-97) Power Strokes with the cats removed or gutted and it doesn't hurt anything on them. It does make the engine a little louder (still fairly quiet due to the turbo but most put on a straight pipe when they knock out the Cat.) I don't foresee any problems with removing the cat on a 99. I would not expect any better mileage though, due to the fact that new catalysts flow very well and don't add a lot of back pressure. For starters you can go to your dealer and this will be covered under warranty. They can get the instructions from the QSF Fax hotline. It is document REN 98-006. Here's a brief overview of what it says: SERVICE RESOLUTION Rear ride height can be reduced on 4x4 F-250/350 Super Duty vehicles for 5th wheel trailer applications by removing the 4x4 axle spacer block and installing a 4x2 rear suspension and brake hardware. Note: After removal of the 4x4 axle spacer the vehicle will tilt toward the rear when fully loaded. It is recommended that vehicles used for 5th wheel towing be equipped with a heavy service front and rear suspension option to minimize this condition. PARTS AFFECTED Rear axle shock absorbers Rear axle U-bolts Rear axle brake hose Rear Suspension Stabilizer bar links (when applicable) Basically the instructions just say to remove the U bolts, and spacers put new brake hoses on and if it has a sway bar replace the links. (Easily said but the Mech. I showed this to is not looking forward to doing it.) Also after completion the headlights will have to be aimed. As for pictures I haven't seen anything yet, but they said the new brochures will be out early due to the shortage of Super Duty brochures (they're going to combine them into one brochure). About the only new news I've heard is that the 5.4L will have 260 HP and 345lb/ft of torque at only 2300 RPM. Ford needs to design the mirrors so that they telescope in and out. That way you don't knock pedestrian over while driving without your trailer (they stick out too far for non towing use). I heard somewhere that Ford is considering this option on future Super Duty trucks? I've pretty much been a GM/Chevy guy all my life but have had a '95 Ranger then '97 F150 and now '98 F150. The '97 had a few "bugs" that were apparently pretty common ( engine knock, high speed vibe, leaky rear window, washer pump switch, bad wheel hop, etc) but I still loved it and got the '98. The '98, now with 600 miles on it has started a brief engine knock sound upon cold startup - similar to what the '97 did, but much higher pitch. I don't think an anti-drainback oil filter will fix it, but am willing to try... anyone have a part number handy? (I normally run Fram filters in my trucks) My second question is regarding the '99 5.4. After talking to another list member, it sounds like there will be some major internal changes (to solve the cold start knock problem). I'd like to retrofit the HP improvements to my '98, and changing cams, intakes, piddly stuff like that doesn't scare me. :-) Does anyone have any insider info on what is changing? The 5.4 pulls my Camaro just fine, but the thoughts of running up against a new 300HP silverado has me a little weary. :-) Thanks for the help, jC. I fabricated a "Z" shaped bracket with a hole at each end. One end is passed through the rear bolt to the rear seat, and the other end has a bolt through it and this holds the jack in place with a butterfly nut. I used to use 2 "C" clamps in the bed with bolts going through the clamps but it produced too much leverage so I moved the jack to the cab. Regards Jean Marc Chartier ....
