The booster only applies more force to the input shaft of the master cylinder. If the booster did go bad then the only result I can think of would be increased pedal effort. The pedal is mechanically connected to the input shaft of the master cylinder through the booster. The only thing that would cause your pedal to go down with continued applied force is a leak somewhere in the system. This could be at the wheel cylinders (drum brakes) or the calipers (disk brakes) or at the master cylinder. In my experience twice it has been the master cylinder. First and most important CHECK YOUR BRAKE FLUID LEVEL NOW!!!! If there is a leak which is what you describe then the system is loosing fluid and will eventually fail and according to Murphy it absolutely WILL be at the WORST POSSIBLE moment. If the fluid level is down this confirms my leak theroy. Now look for the source of the leak. Pull all of the wheels > off and look for fluid leaks. Tip DO NOT ably brake pressure with the rear drums removed. the pistons will just run out of the cylinders and make a huge mess. If you cannot locate a leak at any wheel and there is no apparent leak at the master cylinder the problem is probably the master cylinder. In both of my situations ( 1 Ford truck and 1 bewyuck) it was the master cylinder and there was no external evidence of a leak. Where did the fluid go? It leaked around the seals of the piston and into the vacuum booster. If this is the case then you may want to remove the booster and let the brake fluid drain out. Hope this helps and if you have any more questions just ask. I think the break booster is bad (it came from a a wreck). I do not think I have a vacuum leak. Is it possible that the booster is bad and the diagraphm inside it is gone bad. I purchased a new booster (re-man) for $95. I have not installed it yet. Just want to make sure it is the problem. Any suggestions. Poor Stu, it might have killed him! > The new firm, DaimlerChrysler will rank No. 5 among world auto makers, behind > General Motors, Ford, Toyota and Volkswagen. Of course, we could still see something wierd like Foryota, or Volknissan. I'll bet we're not done yet . . In the last few years, there have been mega-mergers among the western railroads. Rio Grande buys the Southern Pacific. Burlington Northern and Santa Fe merge, knocking Union Pacific from thier perch at the top. UP protests, and fights for a few few months, then rolls over. A few months later, UP buys SP, reclaiming the top. Oh, the SP and UP merged once before, nearly a hundred years ago, but the US government wouldn't allow it. The current status: Instead of five major railroads west of the Mississippi, there are two, which are, of course, jockying for position to merge with one of the remaining Eastern roads, etc, etc. FTC: All of the above railroads transport Ford trucks around the country:-) FTE: A big thanks to Ken and Peggy for their hard work. The digests are flying again! It got to 102 in Killeen (Central Texas) on Wednesday. 2.) front end alignment. 3.) new differential oil. They called me a little while ago and said I need u-joints. Bummer. I'll do those myself, thank you. I needed a longer list anyway. Garry, Listen to these guys about your brakes; they have certainly enlightened me on Ford systems. Genrally, a soft brake pedal indicates master cylinder problems, not booster problems. When the booster goes out is when you start building leg muscles 'cause that pedal gets very hard to push. I have a stuck proportioning valve on my truck. That causes the fluid to dump from one part of the system to the other resulting in fluid overflow at the master cylinder and in my case no rear brake action. (I have done a little temporary re-engineering to solve this problem.) The short of ti: don't be surprised if the booster problem doesn't cure the problem. Jack, On the rear main rope seal: I had C***y 350 that leaked a steady stream so much so as to be undrivable. The problem was the rubber part of the seal on the pan. The engine had been allowed to run hot for too long ang the seal cracked and broke, thus the stream. The upper portion of the seal, the rope part, was not damaged and did not leak, so I left it alone. I did all of this under the truck without pulling the engine. I guess I was lucky or young and stupid or a little of both. Unless you are going to pull the engine anyway, it might be worth a pan gasket set to try. I wish I made $85 per hour. I thought I was doing good at $27.50 with summers off and two weeks at Christmas. Huh Stu? Ken and Peggy, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, I could overload the server and never say it enough. Someone asked about prices of southern trucks. Here are some samples from yesterday's paper. If you want details, e-mail me direct and I'll send you the whole ad(s): 1977 F-150 shortbed, rebuilt V-8, partially restored. $1750. 1972 F-100, 350 (sic) Windsor, three speed, PS, air, runs good. $800. 1976 Ford F-150, 460 cid, needs timing chain. $300. I wanted the last one for myself, but SWMBO vetoed the idea. I double checked and those are the published prices. I have not seen any of them, but we don't salt roads in the winter, we are a long way from the ocean, and we don't have any chemical plants. We do have an Army base and sometimes we get some foreign (non-Texas) trucks. Hope this helps anyone who is thinking of coming south to hunt their next project. - -John jmlagron 1979 F150 Custom 351M C6 1988 Towncar 5.0 EFI AOD 1979 MC (my son is rebellious) Dearborn iron rules!!!!!! = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 61-79-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 61-79-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 May 1998 12:42:16 -0400 From: am14 Subject: FTE 61-79 - Soft locker gary writes: >>Define "soft locker" for us?
