Local junk yard wants $300 for a 77 3/4 ton HD Dana 44. I does have aftermarket locking hubs, not the Factoy ones. The brake calipers are the same but the rotor looks like it has more of an offset but everything else looks the same. They also want 3 bills for the rear end but I can do better than that at the U-Pull-It. What I am asking is Where's the Dana 44 beef? I elected to go with them as a result of good experience with them in my jeep. The Power Lok in the rear of the truck is a little more forgiving on the street than a Detroit, and the truck is probably an 80% street vehicle now. I have found the power lok to be more than adequate on the trail. I do have a Detroit in my jeep now and it is more inconvenient on the street (lock, unlock, clunking, tire > chirp) but really shines in the dirt. The jeep gets about 70% trail usage. On 78-79, the actual locking mech and the chrome/red plastic thing is exactly the same as 1/2 ton D44's. I was surprised by the size of the earlier dana 44 HD's, as they are as big as D60 front hub stuff. Not sure if the earlier one's are that big for a reason (ie; bigger bearings, ect..) or just designed different (someone mentioned about external hubs??????). I think the outer bearing on 78-79 44 HD's is the same, but the inner is definately bigger. I don't see a great advantage on 78-79 vintage except that wheels will match (8 lug) and brakes are bigger. Axle shafts, locking hubs, and one wheel bearing are exactly the same. > Local junk yard wants $300 for a 77 3/4 ton HD Dana 44. I does have > aftermarket locking hubs, not the Factoy ones. I've seen 3 types of locking hubs on dana std 44 fronts. One set uses alum, one set uses interconnecting "stars" and the best set, IMHO, uses intermeshing dog teeth. I'm pretty sure 77 was the same as 78-79 for 44 HD, but if they are the huge one's with 6 mounting screws, I know nothing about those. >The brake calipers are the same Same as what?? Should be twin piston on 44 HD, but single on 44. I have heard only ford used twin piston calipers. Maybe it's not a ford axle. > but the rotor looks like it has more of an offset but > everything else looks the same. It does, about .75 inches. > They also want 3 bills for the rear end > but I can do better than that at the U-Pull-It. What I am asking is > Where's the Dana 44 beef? I don't see it either. Main problem I had with D44 was axle shaft U's and Spicer solids fixed that. 44's ("er's) are comin so I have to upgrade. > If I could only find a Dana 60 Front at that price :( I picked up two (one partial) at a swap meet for 400$. One for parts > and the other I sold for 350$. I can get one for 500$, but shipping would be killer.
